To Tatay

Filed under: Family Stuff,Uncategorized — by dangas @ 9:54 am

And so he sailed away last night…

I heard he was all this strong father who tended his farm (and its not a small piece of land at all)  during his glory years. I don’t have a memory of him doing that. Looking after the many squares of  rice fields in Kamuog. But when Mama told me that during their childhood, sacks of rice from the past harvest were still in their sacks come the another season of harvest time. I pictured Tatay to be this strong man that he was. They are a family of nine so the hard work to put it all together in the farm and raising the family had been really a big thing for him.

I always see him as a silent family man. He is not the kind of grandfather who plays with grandkids or maybe because I’m a girl so i did not see that haha. But he was always there.  I’m trying to pick up a certain moment in my life that he was clear and I remember one.

I spent an entire year of my third grade with him and Nanay in the province while the rest of my family was in Manila. I remember every month, we would go to Maasin to withdraw their monthly allowance. I would be sitting in his lap on the way there and back. That’s two hours each way but I never remember he complained.  I always looked forward for this trip as it was one of the few times that I can go out of our town and travel. And of course, they always let me pick up a box of chocolates before heading home.

I also remember as a toddler, we go to him when our teeth need a pull… Hahaha.. Loose tooth was just a thread and salted water  away.  He would always tell a made up giddy stories to distract and calm our teary and scared little souls then he’d do a quick pull out of nowhere and its done. Haha.

He spoke very good English. Maybe because of early years with the Americans in the country. But it was not the same in Tagalog. I remember one time when he came in the city, he was so full of praises and amazement when heard a toddler speak Tagalog fluently (as if its not a normal thing!). It always brought good laughs when we talked about it during get togethers.

He is also good in tracing family roots. When someone comes over in the family home even someone he hasn’t met before, he always asked for family and parents name and from there he’s be able to trace the guest’s folks generations ahead of him/her. Cool memory eh?! I used to laugh when my cousins would court someone and he would asked about the girls backgound. And almost all the time it always end up that the girl is a cousin or a relative many degress away. Hahaha. My cousins would always get amused and irritated when they heard the dont-go-for-that-girl-she-is-a-relative line with the long family tree connection story from him.

I also remember that he is a Kulafo and Shok Tong (famous alcoholic drinks among old folks)  lover during his younger years. Haha… Cheap fun for him! He also loved to keep himself groomed always. Even when he was sick and bed ridden he would always request for his barber when he feels his hair needed a trim.

He was also a gracious host and he loved to talk to them. Years back, we used to have relatives coming over from other places and he always made sure that the visitors were feeling comfortable though most of the time the guests are from Nanay’s side of the family. I actually just realized its uncommon that his relatives come over.

When he spent a few months here last year, we always laugh about how nosy he can be about what time we come home from school and work. He always commented that 9 in the evening is very late. Hahaha.

So to Tatay… I hope you’re having a good rest now. I’m sure Diabetes had a hard time with you. You fought a good fight. It’s also considerate of you not to go on your daughter’s bday (Mama’s bday today). It would have been hard for her to celebrate her bday in the coming years.  Thank you for that…

I  will always remember you as a devoted husband. Always worrying and defending Nanay all the time. Even when you are weak yourself, you always made sure she is okay. I will forever see you that way…

I’m happy that all your kids are with you during your last moments. I thank God for that. May you find your way to Him and keep your cheery self…

Bye Tay… Glad that you are now Home 🙂

Our First Date :)

Filed under: Lovely Day,Mine Oh Mine! — by dangas @ 4:22 pm

Im one of those ladies [naks! ladies.. hehe] who doesn’t like going out on a date… I find myself as Boy Amor 🙂 Okay… I went out on movies… Ate out with a “guy”… but the “guy” is always a cousin of mine… Always… I just never been to a date with a guy friend before not because I wasn’t asked out [Boohoo! Loser 🙂 ] but just because I don’t want to…

Three sundays ago… Yes, that long before I decided to write about it 🙂 [Dyahe kunyari.. hehe] We did something different from what we usually do… Coming over at home… Watching DVDs… Pigging out [okay… just me 😛 ]…

       I had my first date… Accidental date… 🙂

With the plans of coming home to Leyte coming up… My Tita [the vacation sponsor.. Thanks Ma! 🙂 ] decided to reschedule their flight to Leyte due to some delay with their flight from London. I was asked to have the date changed in CP’s office in Ortigas.

I asked Kulit to accompany me to Ortigas and he happily agreed to come [wala sa plano ang movie] We started the day by offering Holy eggs to St. Clare in Katipunan [yes, he got interested in it too 🙂 ] and had our lunch… We went straight to Ortigas right away.

When we got to Galleria, I took my waiting number [un ba tawag dun?! hehe] and was laughing when our number was more than 50 numbers away from what the counters were currently entertaining… We then decided to walk around and get/do the things that were on our list for that day while in mall. After buying Karen’s cap, having his watch extended for free! [bait nung manong sa shop… the shop near Mcdo,2nd floor… you go there para makalibre din kau… hahaha ] and other things… We went back to the office with our number still away from being called… This time we decided to just find seats in the waiting area and wait for our turn. So we waited… and waited… and waited… [Things that happened while waiting:  answered almost all the word hunt book we bought… finished our floats and fries… half of the Pringles gone… he slept for 15 minutes… and still were waiting 😛 ]

And then he blurted out [maybe because he was just too sleepy 🙂 ]

: If we’re done here early, let’s watch a movie before heading home…

All I was able to say was ‘Okay…’ Half doubting if he meant it [ Peace Kulit 🙂 ]

So when our turned finally came.. I went to the counter… Told her the new date that we want and waited my turned in the cashier… I was in shock when I found out how much the fee was… It was more than the ticket originally cost… Its like paying for another seat plus the terminal fee… 😦 Tip: If you don’t want to pay a lot, have you’re flight schedule changed early…

And then we left… We called my Mama first to let her know that the transaction went well and that I’ll be home late because we’re going to see a movie in Gateway [its nearer to both our place].

He liked Alpha Dog [I first thought its because of JT, but he defended that its the good reviews… Wushu! 🙂 ] and I liked Because I Said So [its a feel good, light movie… Okay… its a girly… funny movie… 🙂 ] We did “jack-en-poy” [funny! haha]  to know whose gonna have the final say and even if we tried it twice, he always won. So we watched Alpha Dog… [though he said if the my choice’s time was better, we could have watched it instead… Palusot.. 🙂 ] The movie was nice..Feeling sleepy though after having spag w/ meatballs and fruitshake [taks! 🙂 ]  It was worth watching… It was a true story btw…

We headed home later after nine. Both happy for spending our day together differently 😛

Post Script: Possible “next time”

In the middle texting last night:

Kulit     : So asa man ta ugma? Movie? hehe

Dangas : hehe… Kulit! [First thing in mind: his kidding]

Kulit     : Kaso late na man ka mogawas ana noh? Nice unta iwatch og movie… Do you want?

Dangas : hehe.. Seryos to? [Now hoping he meant it… hehe]

Kulit     : haha… Dli jod motoo dah… Im asking you out on date lagi… wat man?

Dangas : Hmm… Late na man na kaajo… Next time na lamang [haha… Oh yes… I just said ‘No’ ]

Kulit    : Okay… Maybe next month… [Yes! there something to look forward to 😛 ]

haha… its his first time asking a girl out on a date and bad me, I didn’t take him seriously… hahaha btw.. I still have the movie pass and the food receipt we had last time… 🙂

Where Have I been

Its been a month since my last post… And it made me think where have I been… 🙂

Nothing really so interesting… Yet things have been so good and fun…

Girl Bibo:

I’ve been more of an active person this past few weeks… I attended a cooking class with Missy two weeks ago… I can proudly proclaim… I can make my own Cheesecake dude 😛 It was great! A bonding moment with Missy plus we got to make new friends and new sweets as well… 🙂

I’m your sporty girl! 😛  I never imagined I can do it.. I was never interested in anything sporty aside from watching it especially if it has something to do with a ball… I’m scared to get hurt! haha… But last saturday… I spent 20 minutes running non-stop in a futsal game. Yes! you read it right… I played indoor football… And man! I loved it… I’ve never sweat and enjoyed like that for a long time.. Maybe I’d love to do more… 🙂 Bonus, I made friends too… Life is amazing!

Summer is my thing:

My team started the summer right… And spent 2 days by the sea as early as last month… We went to La Luz Resort in San Juan, Batangas… It was great… The road trip, the countryside (naks!), the good food, the games… I did kayak too… Wow! The water was really made me feel good… and made me realized how blessed I am… It was also a weekend I am thankful for I got to be closer with my teammates… 😛 Did I mention, I had a bad stomach on the last day?! Bad drinking water… hahaha…. I will never forget that getaway…

 New team:

I am with the new team now…New team for France… Its the same people though… Thanks goodness it is… My teammates are really great and I want to have them still… It makes me enjoy work at the same time… Hope things will do well like before… Go Team!

Things to look forward:

My Ma Liling with her hubby is coming home from London by the end of the month and we’re all flying home to Leyte! Yahoo 😛   I never thought I can spend time in the province my whole family for free… and visit Papa too…

Hope we’ll have a great time… And my Mama to unwind as well…

I’ll post updates about it the coming days…

So far… That’s about it… 🙂

Interesting weeks… And thanks I had fun wherever I have been… 😛
